![]() It's hard to accurately quantify price to taste, especially when you get into the "exorbitant" stratosphere of wine. I'll do my best to synthesize what has already been said about AdB: It's price tag comes from its perceived exclusivity, not its quality. What's your opinion? Is it hype? Have your tasting experiences differed? Is the price justified? In my opinion, it doesn't belong anywhere close to the other luxe bottles - Dom Perignon, Cristal, Krug, Salon, Winston Churchill, they're all in a different wheelhouse in terms of flavour. Balanced, I will admit, and clean as a whistle too, but there are quite a few Champagnes that can do that at a much lower price point. Never anything special, never anything standout. In any case, the impressions I got were always straightforward citrus, some white flower, simple chalk minerality, good beading, pale gold in colour. The first time, I could have sworn that Cattier had just rebottled the Chigny-les-Roses NV which was coincidentally right next to it on the table. I've tasted all three variants, and I've tasted the "gold" bottle 10+ times. Most recent controversy aside, just why this wine is even $300/bottle still eludes me. The Forbes article cutout that's been floating around the internet advertising the $20K price tag describes a limited release from a walled vineyard in Ambonnay - a descriptor that any Champagne nut would immediately recognize as being the Clos d'Ambonnay, which is entirely owned by Krug and used to produce their not-even-close-to-$20K 100% pinot noir. I've been asked for my opinion on this by friends and media outlets a few times in the last few days, and I've become tired of pointing out that there is no standard-size bottle of AdB that costs $20K, and they're more likely in the vicinity of $300. Most recently, it was in the news because of a Nicki Minaj/Beyoncé music video in which a bottle was being poured into a hot tub (a waste of any good bubbly). To be honest, I thought this new brand would fizzle and die away pretty quickly, but it looks like the hype train is still running at full speed.
